How IV Therapy Works: The Science Behind Intravenous Nutrient Delivery

There are many ways to support your body with nutrients, starting with the foundation of a healthy diet. However, there will be times when absorption through the digestive system is not going to fully meet your body’s needs. During periods of increased demand, extra support can be helpful.

IV therapy directly delivers the nutrients your body needs without them having to pass through your digestive system. They can give you more immediate availability of vitamins and minerals, along with fluids, and can be perfect for times of illness or stress. At Flow IV & Wellness, intravenous nutrient delivery is one of the services we offer in South Florida, and we are always excited to help our patients learn more about the science behind our treatments.

Why Delivery Methods Are Important for Nutrient Absorption

The way nutrients enter the body affects how efficiently they are absorbed and used. When nutrients are taken orally, they must pass through the digestive system, where factors like gut health, enzyme activity and metabolism can limit how much is actually absorbed. Certain nutrients can be partially lost during digestion, and some people have conditions like gastrointestinal inflammation or reduced stomach acid that also limit the absorption of nutrients.

If a patient has a deficiency of a specific nutrient, we need to consider everything that could be contributing to this deficiency so we can find a delivery method that will provide the right amount of nutrients for the body.

What Is IV Therapy?

IV therapy is a method of delivering fluids and nutrients directly into the bloodstream through a vein. IV infusion therapy makes vitamins and minerals immediately available for circulation throughout the body and allows for 100% absorption of any fluids and nutrients used in the infusion. This delivery method is used when faster absorption or higher bioavailability is needed.

How the Digestive System Limits Oral Nutrient Absorption

Breakdown and Digestion

Oral nutrients must first be broken down by stomach acid and digestive enzymes before absorption can begin. Vitamin C and some B vitamins are more stable in acidic environments and can degrade when exposed to a stomach with a low pH, which reduces the amount that remains available for absorption. Fats are required to absorb fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K, so low dietary fat intake can limit uptake even when taking supplements consistently. Other factors like enzyme availability and digestive efficiency vary between patients, which influence how much of a nutrient survives the digestive process.

How Vitamins and Minerals Are Digested

When you swallow a vitamin supplement, it travels through the esophagus into the stomach, where digestion begins. Stomach acid and enzymes start breaking down the supplement, then the contents move into the small intestine for further processing with enzymes and fluids from the liver and pancreas. Most absorption occurs in the second and third portions of the small intestine as nutrients pass through the intestinal lining.

Water-soluble vitamins such as B vitamins and vitamin C are absorbed directly into the bloodstream, while fat-soluble vitamins, including A, D, E, and K, require bile acids and enter the lymphatic system before reaching circulation. The bloodstream then carries nutrients to cells and tissues throughout the body. Excess water-soluble vitamins are eliminated through urine, while fat-soluble vitamins are stored in the liver and fatty tissue for later use.

Absorption Barriers in the Gut

While the absorption and use of vitamins and minerals is an impressive process, it can be limited by several factors. Low stomach acid or reduced enzyme activity can interfere with the breakdown of supplements and affect minerals like calcium, magnesium and iron. Fat-soluble vitamins depend on bile acids for absorption, so reduced bile production can limit uptake. Gut inflammation and any changes in the intestinal lining can disrupt transport into the bloodstream.

External Factors That Can Affect Oral Supplement Effectiveness

The effectiveness of oral supplements can also be affected by factors outside the body. Inconsistent manufacturing and unstable ingredient forms can result in lower nutrient content when a supplement is taken. Storage and shipping conditions also sometimes influence the potency of even the best supplements, since light and heat can degrade some nutrients.

How IV Therapy Bypasses the Digestive Tract

Direct Venous Access

During IV therapy, the nutrients are delivered right into the vein instead of passing through the stomach or intestines. When delivered this way, vitamins and minerals enter your circulation without ever being exposed to all of the gastrointestinal factors mentioned above that can impact absorption. IV nutrient therapy changes how vitamins and nutrients are distributed and used by the tissues, and allows for access to compounds that are poorly tolerated or inconsistently absorbed.

Immediate Entry Into the Bloodstream

Once nutrients enter a vein, they circulate throughout the body almost immediately. They are rapidly distributed to organs and tissues, and blood plasma levels rise higher and more predictably compared to the results of oral intake.

Elimination of Gastrointestinal Variables

IV drip therapy avoids issues related to nausea, malabsorption or nutrient breakdown that can occur in the gastrointestinal tract. This can be helpful in many situations, such as after a stomach virus when the digestive system is intolerant to oral supplements, or for those who have conditions that interfere with absorption.

Consistent and Predictable Delivery

IV delivery allows nutrients and fluids to be given in pre-measured amounts at a steady pace. Digestion can change from day to day based on diet, stress and gut function, which naturally affects absorption. A more consistent delivery pattern with IV hydration therapy makes it easier to observe how the body uses and responds to specific nutrients.
